John

John F. Kennedy

At the end of the top 20 list of the most popular boys' names in the US, comes a classic. The name John has been slowly declining in popularity for many years, moving from the number one spot to its least popular spot: the 2008 placing at number 20.

But while many new parents try to show their independence by choosing more modern names for their newborns, many others cling to the strong classic name of John. As the name has been so popular for so many years, many parents who name their children after deceased relatives choose John. For these reasons, even with the slow decline in popularity, it is certain the name will stay popular for many more years.

The name John is, of course, biblical. It refers mainly to John the Baptist and to one of the Apostles. The meaning of the name comes from the Hebrew word for God is Gracious (or Merciful).

As the name John has been around for so long, obviously it has many variations in many languages, from the female Gia and Jenna to the male Jack, Sean, Yannis, Hans, Evan, and many more.
