Moving up from the eleventh spot in 2007 to the sixth in 2008, the name Alexander has finally made the top 10. This is the first name on the list of popular boys' names that did not originate in the Old Testament.

The name Alexander is the Latinized version of the Greek name Alexandros ("defender of men" or "unbeatable man"). The most famous Alexander in history was Alexander the Great, whose empire included the area from Greece to India.
