The name Jacob is of Hebrew origins. Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rebecca, the father of the twelve sons who later became the twelve tribes of Israel. He was also Esau's twin brother, holding his heel as he was born. His name is explained as meaning "holder of the heel" or "supplanter".

The name Jacob has been the most popular boy's name in the US since 1999, and has been in the top 10 since 1993.

In English, the names Jack, Jake, James, Jim, and Jimmy are derived from the name Jacob.
