Ethan

Ethan Hawke

Ethan comes at number 3 on the SSA list of popular boys' names. Like the first two names, the origin of Ethan is Hebrew. In the Bible, where the name means strong, firm, and enduring, Ethan was a writer and musician in King David's court. The name started gaining popularity in the US following the fame of Ethan Allen, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, but became popular toward the end of the 20th century.

Another form of the name Ethan, used by some Jewish people, especially in Israel, is Eitan.

2009 Update:
In 2009, the name Ethan moved up a spot, to number 2, its highest spot ever.

2010 Update:
Still number 2. What will next year bring? Is there a chance Ethan will become the most popular boys' name in the US, will it clear the way back for Michael or for a new runner up, or will Ethan remain at number 2?
